How to open your garage door in a power outage

When a blizzard or an ice storm drops the power in the valley, the garage door is suddenly a 150-pound manual door - and the car is on the wrong side of it. Here’s the procedure, the winter cautions that matter here, and the one upgrade that makes this whole article unnecessary.

Opening the door with no power

  1. Door fully closed first, if you can help it. The release should be pulled with the door down - a disconnected door that’s partway up can slide, and on a broken spring it can fall.
  2. Find the red cord hanging from the opener rail, toward the middle of the ceiling track.
  3. Pull it straight down. You’ll feel the trolley release. The door is now free of the motor.
  4. Lift with your legs, both hands under the bottom edge. A healthy, balanced door lifts with modest effort and stays put at full height.
  5. Check it holds before you duck under. If the door wants to drift down, don’t trust it - prop it or hold it while the car exits with a second person driving.

The warning that matters: if the door is extremely heavy - if lifting it feels like lifting the actual weight of a steel door - a spring is broken. Stop. That door can slam shut with real force. Leave it, take the other car or a ride, and call for spring repair when the roads clear.

Closing it behind you (the part people skip)

An attached garage with an open door in a January outage will pull the house temperature down fast and put every pipe in the garage wall at risk. Lower the door by hand - control it the whole way, it will want to run the last two feet - and slide the manual lock bar if your door has one, because a disconnected door is otherwise liftable from outside.

Reconnecting when the power returns

Most openers re-latch automatically: with the door fully closed, press the remote and the trolley picks the release back up with a clunk. If yours doesn’t, pull the cord toward the door (away from the motor) to reset the lever, then cycle the opener.

The upgrade that ends this problem

Battery-backup openers exist precisely for valley winters: the door runs normally through an outage, sensors and all, for a couple dozen cycles.
